Is the FTC click-to-cancel rule in force?
The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel rule was struck down by a federal appeals court in July 2025, before it took effect. In March 2026 the FTC asked for public comment on a new rule. As of 27 September 2026 no new click-to-cancel rule is in force, though the FTC still acts against hard-to-cancel subscriptions under existing law.
What you can do instead
- Follow the company's own cancel steps and keep the confirmation email or a screenshot.
- If you signed up in an app, cancel in Apple or Google Play subscriptions.
- If a company keeps charging after you cancelled, dispute the charge with your card issuer and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
