Cancelling a subscription in the UK: your rights
In the UK you have more ways out of a subscription than most people use. Here is what the law gives you today, and what changes in 2027.
The 14-day cooling-off period
A service contract made online, by phone or away from a shop can usually be cancelled within 14 days of signing up, without a reason.
Stopping a recurring card payment
You can stop a recurring card payment (a continuous payment authority) by telling your bank or card company, up to the end of the business day before it is due. They must do it. That stops the money, not the contract, so you may still owe what you agreed.
New rules from 2027
New UK subscription rules start in January 2027: clearer information up front, regular reminders, an easier way to leave, and a new 14-day cooling-off period after a free trial or a renewal.
